After playing with my older brother F's marines for a while, I finally decided to pick an army and stick with it.
I wanted to make an army that looked good and in ten years time I would look at them and still think, "wow I actually did a good job with them, didn't I?"
My main thought was that I need to enjoy the TROOPS I must field or else I will begrudge a compulsory choice every game I play.
I dislike that Tacticals can only be bolter equipped. If I want bolt pistol & chain sword then I should be able to have it.
This narrowed the field to BT, BA and SW.
At the time SW had to pay a high cost for BC jump-packs & bike and LF weapons were also astronomical. This has since been rectified by Phil Kelly's codex.
BA suffered with the terrible points costs of C:White Dwarf (as I like to call it). Besides the DC premium (which was fair), they also had to pay a bit more than an UM would for the same thing. I didn't like red for armies (maybe as a backlash to the Red Era in '90's WD) at the time, though it has grown on me.
This left Templars. I was really turned off by no Devastators & Whirlwinds (which had been staples when using my brother's marines) but I liked the modelling potential of them. I really loved DA (which was the list I played with) the robes & hoods just look so sweet to me and thought they could be used. With Fantasy's big range of Empire & Bretonnian knightly gear I was convinced. Mark Gibbons drawings were also a winner. They also seem to me to be like Uruk-hai, angry and running everywhere. This lead to Khorne Berserkers being used for the running legs, I always loved chain axes and I was told by my brother about making "Khorne Crusader" helmets. It all was quite compelling for me.
Having played 5 games with them (at the time of writing) versus my brothers Orks, I must say I love bashing minis in melee & now my whole army can do it!
Sure the army has it's limitations but if you play to it's strengths then you'll be ahead of an UM list trying to do the same thing.
